Snowman Shelf Sitter using a Repurposed Dollar Tree Item

Posted by Tracy Wellmann ~ December 24, 2019

Hey Y’all ~

Sometimes (more like a lot of the times) I buy more supplies at Dollar Tree then what I need so I’m left with a bunch of supplies after the season is over.  This year I told myself that I’m going to start using what I have.  If you’re not following along on the blog make sure you’re signed up to receive notices when I post new stuff.

I started with this wooden pumpkin:

These wood pumpkins were extremely popular this fall season at Dollar Tree so maybe you were a few of the lucky ones to snatch some up.  Don’t have a wood pumpkin?  NO problem….do this same craft with another wood block or even a box.  Let your creation and imagination kick in.

I started by painting the wood pumpkin using a crackling technique.  It’s one of my favorite painting techniques.  You can see how I did it in the video here OR watch this video to see a different version.

I start with painting the wood block with black paint.

Once the black paint was dry I added a layer of Crackle Medium.  I let it dry for about 15-20 minutes.

The crackle medium will be “wet” looking but is dry to the touch.  That way you know it’s ready to go.

TIP – some friends have shared they get the same result (crackle technique) using MOD PODGE or SCHOOL GLUE.  I have not tried this myself but wanted to share that tip.

I then put on a layer of Plaster Chalk Paint and you’ll literally see your piece start to crackle (or crack) before your eyes.

Okay guys – I know some may be CRINGING…but I like the funky not so perfect look of this block.  It’s not even and I’m OK with that. 🙂

I added some cheeks and a carrot nose with paint.

I use a black sharpie maker to outline and doodle for accents.

Making cute little snowmen is not new for me but I recently shared on my YouTube channel here how easy it was to create this cute shelf sitter.

Watch the video below if you’d like to see exactly how I created this cutie….
