Elf on the Shelf – Sharing the True Meaning of Christmas

You may remember this post from the other day when I shared that our family would be adopting an elf this year.   Don’t feel alone if you’re not familiar with this tradition — I myself only learned of it last year.

Our Elf on the Shelf arrived from the North Pole on Thanksgiving Day addressed to Spencer.  He was very excited with this little fella and quickly wanted to learn as much as he could.  He loved the book and quickly decided his name was Jack.  Jack Elf Wellmann is his whole name.  Per Spencer “he has to have a middle name, mom“.

For the past few weeks I searched ideas of what others were doing with their family elf, for the story behind this elf and what purpose I really wanted this little fella to portray to Spencer.  I decided against the naughty or mischievous places our elf would be found or what he would be doing.  Instead I wanted Jack to continue our teachings of the true meaning of Christmas — it’s not just about the presents.  It’s about giving, sharing, and preparing for the birth of Jesus.  This is going to take LOTS of preparing on my part but by the time Christmas Eve rolls around I know it will be all worth it and I’m happy to share this with all of my CJToo friends.

I found this fantastic kindergarten teacher’s blog who has created a Magic Elf Activity and Writing Pack that she uses in her classroom.  Read her story here of the clever and educational ways she teaches her students the true meaning of Christmas and doesn’t just use the Magic Elf for other purposes.  ☀ Light Bulb moment — I found our elf’s purpose and knew this is what I wanted to do.  She created this poster with words she would be teaching her students during the month of December. (love)  She’s offering this cute poster as a free download on her blog so check that out if you’d like.

Stay tuned for more stories on our elf, Jack and what fun things we learn along the way.

  1. Elf on the Shelf is a really cute idea. I just watched the movie for the first time last night. If I had kids we would def. be doing something with the elf as well. Gotta remember that for when I do!

  3. I love how you are trying to show your kids the true meaning of Christmas with Elf Jack. They will actually learn something by the examples set and I think it is a great idea.
I am following you now and would love for you to follow along.

  4. I feel a little out of the loop on this. I had heard people use the phrase “elf on a shelf” before but had no idea what they were talking about. I just learned about what it actually was this year. It is a very neat idea. My little one is only a year old, but when she gets a little older, I will definitely be taking part in this.
